Quick answerPhantom Rock is a skull-shaped granite formation on Cheengeri hill near Ambalavayal, named after the comic-book hero. A short trek leads to the rock, and the hilltop looks over Karapuzha reservoir, Chembra, Edakkal and the Banasura hills.
Our tip
A striking skull-shaped rock formation near Sultan Bathery. Short trek, panoramic views, almost nobody there. Photography at golden hour is extraordinary. One of my personal favourites in Wayanad; go late afternoon for the best light. From our guest guidebook

What to expect
The trail climbs through scrub and rock to the formation that gives the place its name. The DTPC centre on Cheengeri hill has a short leisure trail and a longer guided trek to the summit, plus a ticket counter, restrooms and a cafeteria. Hornbills and treepies are often seen.
Plan your visit
- Combine it with Edakkal Caves and Karapuzha Dam, all in the Ambalavayal area.
- Wear proper shoes; the final 500 m is a narrow path.
- Fees and hours change, so confirm at the counter.
