Our tip
Best elephant sightings in Wayanad. Morning safaris start around 6–7 AM; book online or at the counter, and arrive early because vehicle numbers are capped. Part of the Nagarhole–Bandipur–Mudumalai corridor. Also great for gaur, spotted deer and birdlife. Go early, stay quiet. From our guest guidebook

What to expect
Muthanga is a Project Elephant site and part of the forest that joins Bandipur and Mudumalai. You ride through deciduous forest and bamboo on a set route in the outer tourism zone with a forest guide. Deer, gaur, langurs and birds are common, elephants are frequent, and tigers are a rare bonus.
Plan your visit
- Take the earliest morning slot you can get; animals are most active then.
- Jeep fees are per vehicle, so they suit a full group; the forest bus is cheaper for two.
- Safari buses were seized in 2025–26 over an old compensation case. Check that buses are running before you go.
- Carry binoculars and keep voices low.
Good to know
Published fees differ widely between official pages, so confirm when you book. Safaris can be restricted in heavy monsoon rain.

Yes, through the forest department's booking site; tickets are also sold at the counter, subject to the daily cap.
Muthanga or Tholpetty?
